Max Planck Hub Fiscal and Social State
On 1 January 2024, the Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy and the Max Planck Institute for Tax Law and Public Finance established the Max Planck Hub Fiscal and Social State, which aims to bring together social and tax law perspectives in the context of fundamental legal research. The research questions of the two Max Planck Institutes are closely linked. The national, European and international challenges of the recent past - be it the COVID-19 pandemic or the energy crisis resulting from the war in Ukraine - have made one thing very clear: neither the fiscal (tax) side of the state nor the welfare (social protection) side can be discussed in isolation.
The Future of the Fiscal State and the Social State in the European Union
The crises have also stretched the fabric of the European Union (EU) to its outer limits. It is therefore necessary to take a fresh look at the overall structure - taking into account both the constitutional aspects as well as the economic and financial implications. Against this background, the lecture series on the 'Future of the Fiscal State and the Social State in the European Union' has been set up under the umbrella of theMax Planck Hub Fiscal and Social State. It aims to address major issues of the future framework of the EU dealing with taxation, social security, fiscal transfers, multi-level fiscal and social governance and the concept of solidarity within Europe. This involves both the division of labour between the Member States and the EU as well as the interaction between the different European Institutions and their inner workings.
