This project explores the differences in physical health and mental well-being between migrants and natives of the European destination countries. Using SHARE data, the study focuses on persons aged 50 and above. The results show that compared to natives, migrants are disadvantaged in terms of physical health and mental well-being. This is especially the case among female migrants from Southern European countries. Additionally, analyses for the subsample of male migrants reveal differences in grip strength according to employment status. The negative impact of migration is larger for employed than for retired respondents. To sum up, the findings of this study indicate that the health advantage of recently arrived migrants found in other studies diminishes in the long run and even becomes a health disadvantage in later life.
