The Institute mourns the loss of Prof. Baron von Maydell

Prof. Dr. Dr. Dr. h.c. Bernd Baron von Maydell passed away after an eventful, fulfilled and highly successful academic life. In 1992 he was appointed Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society and Director of the Institute for Social Law and Social Policy, then known as the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Social Law, which he managed until his retirement in 2002. Bernd von Maydell remained connected to the Institute for many years afterwards through an intensive scientific and personal exchange. During his career he has not only helped to shape German, European and international social law, but has also made his knowledge available to governments and national and international organisations. Maydell's manifold activities were also supported by the concern to contribute to socio-political progress through social law.
