What Motivates Retirement in Europe? The Role of (In)Voluntary Unemployment on the Way to Retirement

This project aims at investigating the individual motivation for retirement. As a special feature, we investigate the role of (in)voluntary unemployment on the way to retirement. Becoming unemployed in old age and close to retirement, respectively, could be a serious problem for individuals. However, unemployment can also be used as a way to early retirement and therefore happens on purpose. We analyze the prevalence and determinants of (in)voluntary unemployment on the way to retirement and study variation across SHARE countries.
